Minnesota Brass kicked off its competition with a first-place finish at Mankato, Minn.’s Thunder of Drums competition, posting a score of 74.100 to capture the All-Ages Class title. The second-place Govenaires from St. Peter, Minn., scored 66.400, while the Bluecoats aced the World Class division with 78.900, and Iowa’s Colt Cadets took the Open Class title with 46.700 points.
The contest capped the season-opening weekend for MBI, which saw the corps make a return visit to Alexandria, Minn.’s Vikingland Band Festival to perform in the parade and put on an exhibition of the field show, “Mad Circus,” for the marching-band attendants.
The following weekend the corps performed in Fourth of July parades in Cannon Falls and Apple Valley.
All in all it was a full week for the corps.
Next up: Minnesota Brass will host the big DCI Minnesota show at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis campus. Featuring every past DCI champion—including the Blue Devils, Cadets and Carolina Crown, who already this season find themselves in a dogfight for the 2015 title—20 drum corps will take the field, beginning at 3:30 on Saturday, July 11. MBI will close the show for the audience of more than 10,000 expected to attend the highly anticipated showcase event. It will be the largest lineup of World, Open and All-Age class corps to take the field to this point this season.
